Here is a place I should've immediately rated upon joining Epinions! I used to live there, after all. I moved there in late summer of '91, right when the summer season was winding down. I made it just in time to enjoy the last days of the summer activities on the mountain. I hiked and cycled and took the huge tubing slide down the side of the mountain. The activities were endless -- and your kids will love it.
If you are lucky enough to stay there through the last summer days, you will be one of the honored few who enjoy the changing of the Aspen trees -- truly a reason to stay a few days longer than you intended to. The colors are beautiful and to those like me (from the deep South - where trees are two colors, green and brown)the scene is stunning.
The winter months are (of course) the most popular months. Everyone must ski! (But don't limit your time to just winter...you will miss out on so much!) Winter Park is unique in a few aspects. First of all, you won't spend your life's fortune on the trip -- even if you bring your kids. Winter Park's ski passes are considerably less expensive than Vail, Aspen, or Steamboat Springs. You will get the same service and in fact, even more slope level options than you would elsewhere.
A word of warning though -- even the "bunny hill" is rough to get to. The first time I pushed myself off the lift, I went flying down the hill and into a huge pile of snow. The very second your skis hit the snow, there's a hill. My advice for beginners is to take a ski lesson - or two. The instructors are AWESOME! Right when you think you look like a fool, there they are to tell you don't. They are truly professionals.
Winter Park is not only for skiing though. If you get tired of pushing yourself to keep up with your 5 year old, or you just cannot get the
hang of skiing -- try travelling about 3 minutes away to Fraser. There's a tubing hill there that requires NO skill. It is just plain fun. Fraser and Winter Park also offer shopping at many small and friendly shopping centers, including dozens of eateries worth trying. The hotels/condos are also substantial and again, not as expensive as many other resorts. (Especially during off seasons.)
I recommend Winter Park to those who truly enjoy skiing -- or for those who don't. Visiting during off seasons or summer is fantastic for those who need tranquility and quiet.
It is not as hoity-toity as many other resorts in Colorado and it offers more than just skiing. There simply is no reason why you shouldn't give a try.
